Alexandria’s Fiona Pennie has finished in sixth place in the Olympic K1 canoe slalom event at Rio 2016.

Pennie finished with a time of 105.70s, with Maialen Chourraut of Spain winning gold with 98.65s, well clear of the rest of the pack.

However, she racked up four seconds worth of penalties for touching the poles.

And frustratingly, if she had not received any penalties, she would have finished in the silver medal position, with Luuka Jones of New Zealand and Jessica Fox of Australia finishing with times of 101.82s and 102.49s respectively.

The Scot had been in scintillating form going into the final, finishing third in the preliminaries and second in the semi-finals earlier today.

And the 33-year-old continued Team GB’s strong performances in the event, with fellow Brits David Florence and Richard Hounslow winning silver in the Canon Slalom Double (C2) and Pennie’s training partner Joe Clarke winning gold yesterday in the K1 class.

She was outstanding throughout the week, posting a time of 1:40.52, finishing third in the preliminary rounds behind Stefanie Horn of Italy and Australia's Fox with times of 1:39.07 and 1:39.51 respectively.

And Pennie, who previously competed the Olympics once before in Beijing 2008, went one place better in the semi-finals.

However she received an early two second penalty for touching one of the poles in her final, and then she picked up another penalty towards the end of the run which all but ended her medal hopes.

The conditions at the arena got tougher as the day went on, and the competitors going later struggled with the increasingly strong wind.
