Dumbarton Academy ran out 4-0 winners against Eaglesham in the first round of the Douglas Smith League Cup.

A Tom McHard brace, an Alan Nicholson header and an own-goal sealed a comfortable victory for Accies as they look to defend the trophy.

McHard’s goals both came towards the end of the first half.

The first goal arrived following a good passing move between Jack Buchanan and Andrew MacDonald – the latter released McHard who finished nicely.

The second was an exquisite finish from the striker.

A throw-in from Jack Buchanan to Ian Davie saw the latter cross into the box. The ball arrived at McHard whose initial control to create space was excellent, then he finished low into the net.

The visitors then sought to find a route back into the game with a shot from captain Ross Carlin flashing wide on the stroke of half time.

The second half saw Accies continue to dictate the pace of the game with an early effort from Andrew MacDonald going wide.

Accies were defending well, with Craig Cavana and Leo Daremas combining well. The latter did well to clear for a corner on 50 minutes when danger was afoot.

To their credit, Eaglesham continued to pose Accies problems during the second half however their efforts at goal were mainly from afar which McGillivray was alert to.

Accies manager Michael Dickie made a couple of substitutions in quick succession on 70 minutes, with Stewart MacKenzie replacing Callum Shipcott and Colin McPhee coming on for Ian Davie.

The latter change in particular was effective as the defender placed an excellent cross to the back post and Nicholson headed home.

McPhee then created the fourth with another cross into the box, with Paul McNairn heading the ball past his own keeper.
