Dumbarton’s Joe Thomson says he is enjoying getting regular first team opportunities.

The midfielder, who is on loan from Celtic, has started the last five games in the league, while also playing for Celtic’s under-20 side in the Challenge Cup.

But the 19-year-old said the difference between the two is huge, and is delighted with life so far with Stevie Aitken’s side.

He said: “I’m loving it, it’s been five games now obviously the gaffer’s had faith in me and started me every game.

“I’m really enjoying it, it’s a lot different and better than the under-20s football.

“I think it’s a big step up but one that I think I’ve done alright with so far and I’m looking to keep going.”

In the media this week there has been debate about whether under-20 teams should be introduced into current Scottish League structure.

Celtic’s youth team waltzed the Development League last year, winning it with six games to spare.

But for Thomson, the gap between under-20s and first team football is large, proven last week by Celtic under-20s’ 5-1 defeat to Livingston in the Challenge Cup.

The Hoops youth team was the last one left in the tournament, after promising victories against Annan and Stenhousemuir.

From his own experience, Thomson thinks playing against professional teams can only benefit younger players and help bridge the gap between age grade football and the first team.

He added: “I think it would be a step up for the teams.

“I played for the Celtic under-20 team last week and we got beat 5-1 off Livingston.

“Those are the games you’re looking for, because the 20s games can be a bit false, and I think it would be good to see teams join the lower leagues.

“It’s a good start [under-20s teams being introduced into the Challenge Cup] and it would be a good opportunity for players.”
