Dumbarton fell to their first home league defeat of the season, losing 1-0 to Hibernian in the Scottish Championship at the CID Stadium.

Jason Cummings’ first half penalty was enough to seal the three points for Neil Lennon’s side, after Gregor Buchanan was ruled to have brought down Grant Holt.

The visitors continue their 100 per cent record at the start of the season, as the Sons slip down to sixth, with Garry Fleming coming off the bench to make his 150th appearance for the hosts.

Hibs dominated the possession stats, but the home side more than held their own against the heavy title favourites for this year’s league title.

The visitors signalled their intent early on, and had the first clear-cut chance of the game after 17 minutes.

Former Norwich City striker Holt capitalised on Darren Barr’s slip at the back post, heading the ball to Cummings at the back post.

But the Scottish u21 striker’s header was palmed away by Alan Martin.

The Sons replied with pressure of their own shortly after, and had three corners in quick succession, with David Smith’s effort from 8 yards being blocked by Lewis Stevenson.

But the pendulum swung back into the favour of the Edinburgh side shortly after.

After 31 minutes, right-back David Gray fired a cross to the back post, and referee Greg Aitken adjudged Buchanan to have hauled Holt to the ground.

After waving away the protests from the hosts, Cummings picked his spot and rolled the ball calmly into the back of the net for his seventh goal of the season.

And in the last seven games between the two sides, the team to score first has gone on to win the game, with that run continued today.

And Cummings, who was in a confident mood on his 100th start for Hibs, had a great chance to double his tally after the restart.

The striker was one-on-one with only Martin to beat, but he chose to dink his shot over the top of the Sons goalkeeper, with his effort flying over the bar.

Joe Thomson, back in the starting line-up for Dumbarton after being in action for Celtic u20s last week, had the Sons best chance of the game so far at the start of the second half.

The 19-year-old curled his effort round the wall, but keeper Ofir Marciano was equal to his attempt.

And despite having more of the ball, there was still only one goal in the game.

Sons manager Stevie Aitken moved to turn the tide, making attacking changes bringing on Garry Fleming, walking out for the 150th time in a Sons jersey.

And after 78 minutes, there was another contentious penalty shout.

Robert Thomson was hauled down, much to the frustrations of the Sons fans and management, with Dumbarton assistant Stephen Farrell sent to the stands.

Hibs supporters started to become more nervous with the clock ticking down, as their team began to fall deeper and deeper and Neil Lennon looking to shut up shop with his substitutions.

And the Edinburgh side began to show their experience, using up the valuable seconds left on the clock to close out the game.

And while the Sons were able to get six points off the Edinburgh side last year, they looked unable to recreate their heroics this time round.
